They are the endpoints where occupants interact with water supply and drainage. When a fixture fails—a faucet leaks, a drain clogs, a trim kit cracks—the building's water integrity is compromised, water bills rise, walls may rot, and residents or tenants lose function.

Understanding what fixtures are, why they fail, and how they work as a system is essential for anyone who specifies, installs, maintains, or repairs buildings. Fixtures seem simple—they sit on counters or emerge from walls—but their performance depends on material selection, pressure rating, installation quality, water chemistry, and maintenance discipline. A single incorrect specification cascades: install a faucet rated for 80 PSI in a 140 PSI building and it will fail prematurely. Ignore aerator cleaning and sediment clogs the supply line. Use incompatible trim kits and rough-in bodies and the installation becomes impossible mid-project.
