It is a dimensional textile, not a fabric thread in the conventional sense. It serves as a framework that holds its shape without stretching, tearing, or warping under normal tension. Definition and Core Composition

At its most basic level, a sheet of plastic canvas consists of a flat plane of polymer resin, punched or molded with a grid of square or diamond-shaped holes. The material between the holes is called webbing, and it forms the structural ribs that give the canvas its strength. The average spacing between holes is measured in mesh, typically expressed as a count per inch. A standard hobby sheet with 7 holes per inch is called 7-mesh canvas; a finer sheet with 10 or 14 holes per inch is called 10-mesh or 14-mesh canvas.

The polymer resin is almost always an olefin, either polypropylene or polyethylene, though some specialty brands use polyvinyl chloride (PVC) or acrylic blends for specific applications. Polypropylene is a light, semi-rigid plastic with high chemical resistance and moderate structural strength. It is the most common resin in consumer plastic canvas because it is inexpensive, easily extruded, and resistant to water and most solvents.
