A hand plane is a precision tool that removes thin, controlled shavings of wood by forcing the grain against a sharp blade set at a specific angle. This simple description masks considerable mechanical sophistication. Unlike power sanders or routers, which remove material through speed and abrasion, a plane works through geometry: the angle of the blade, the angle of the sole, the pressure you apply, and the direction of the grain all combine to determine whether the plane glides smoothly and produces a clean surface or catches, chatter, or tears out.
