A pipe adapter is a fitting that connects two pieces of pipe (or a pipe to a fixture) when they cannot be joined directly. A bushing is a fitting that reduces the size of a larger opening to accommodate a smaller pipe. Both are fittings you encounter constantly in plumbing and HVAC systems, yet they are often chosen without much thought. A plumber grabs an adapter off a shelf, screws it in, and moves on. The result is usually fine—but sometimes it isn't. Understanding what these fittings do, and why they matter, is the foundation for choosing and installing them correctly.
Consider a common scenario: you're roughing out a water supply line in a house and you need to transition from a 1-inch main line to 3/4-inch branch lines. You need an adapter—specifically, a reducing adapter. You also need to know several things before you pick one: Are you working with threaded connections or soldered copper? What thread standard do you need (NPT or NPTF)? What material should the adapter be (brass, bronze, stainless, plastic)? What pressure rating do you need? Does your local code require lead-free brass? A wrong choice—using a non-lead-free brass adapter in drinking water, or mixing incompatible materials—can cause leaks, corrosion, or code violations. Get it right, and the system runs for decades with no problems.
