Pinball machines are electromechanical or electronic systems designed to accept payment (coin, card, or digital), engage a player through controlled physical and visual feedback, and generate revenue in public venues, arcades, or private settings. Unlike video games, which display game logic on a screen, pinball machines conduct the game on a physical playfield—a sloped wooden or composite surface dotted with bumpers, ramps, lanes, and flippers. The ball's motion, guided by gravity and player-controlled flippers, triggers electrical circuits that score points, light targets, and advance the game state. Understanding how these systems work is essential whether you are operating machines for profit, servicing them for customers, or making a purchase decision.
A pinball machine is fundamentally a closed mechanical and electrical system. A steel ball is launched up a sloped playfield and begins rolling back down due to gravity. The player uses two mechanical flippers—electromechanical arms controlled by buttons—to strike the ball and direct it around the playfield. As the ball strikes various targets, bumpers, and ramps, it completes electrical circuits. These circuits trigger visible feedback: bumpers light up and flash, targets drop into the playfield, sounds play, and the scoring system updates. The game ends when the ball drains past the flippers into the bottom of the machine. The simplest machines play a single ball; more complex ones allow multiple balls in play simultaneously or multiple turns per game.
