Chapter 1: Understanding Photography

Photography is the capture of light through a lens, focused onto a light-sensitive surface (either film or a digital sensor), to create an image. That is the complete technical definition. But to understand photography as a practical tool—to know why certain equipment costs what it does, why some specifications matter and others don't, why some photographs work and others fail—you must understand the physical constraints that define the process.

When light enters a camera through a lens, it obeys the laws of physics. Light travels in straight lines until it hits an object, bounces off that object, and enters the lens. The lens bends (refracts) those light rays so they converge onto a single point—the focal plane, where the sensor sits. If the lens is well-designed and properly manufactured, all the light rays from a single point in the real world will converge back onto a single point on the sensor, creating a sharp reproduction of that object. If something goes wrong—the lens is of poor quality, the sensor is misaligned, or the light is insufficient—that convergence fails, and you get a blurry or underexposed image.

This explains why lens quality matters so much. A cheap lens may focus light approximately onto the sensor, but not precisely. A professional lens is manufactured to tighter tolerances so that light converges exactly.
