Chapter 1: Understanding Photo Storage
The first thing to understand about photo storage is that it is not a single thing. When you say "photo storage," you are referring to an entire system, a chain of components and processes that work together to hold, protect, and provide access to your image files. That chain starts with the physical medium, the hard drive or memory card where the data physically resides. But it extends upward through the logical structure of the file system, the operating system that manages it, and finally to the software and workflows you use to put images in and get them out. To think of storage as just "a disk" is like thinking of a car as "a steering wheel." It is a critical part, but it cannot work without the engine, the chassis, and the driver.
At the most fundamental level, all digital photo storage, regardless of the medium, works the same way. A photograph captured by a digital camera is a collection of numbers, specifically a long string of ones and zeros known as binary data. The role of a storage device is to record this sequence of numbers and be able to retrieve it, accurately and completely, at a later time. The physical mechanism for that recording and playback differs wildly between technologies.
