Pest control traps are mechanical, electronic, or chemical devices designed to capture, kill, or monitor pest insects and rodents. Despite advances in pesticide formulations, biological controls, and exclusion techniques, traps remain a cornerstone of professional pest management. They work by exploiting the physical or behavioral characteristics of target pests—the way a mouse navigates a wall, how a cockroach seeks shelter, or where a fly lands to feed. Understanding what traps actually do, and why they sometimes fail, requires understanding both the trap mechanism itself and the pest species it targets.

A pest control trap operates on one of several basic principles. A mechanical snap trap kills through a spring-loaded bar triggered by an animal touching a bait pedal or pressure plate. A glue board immobilizes an insect or small rodent through an adhesive surface. An electronic trap delivers a high-voltage shock when the pest completes a circuit. A pitfall trap uses gravity or a funnel design to prevent escape once an animal enters. A water trap (or drowning trap) relies on a design that allows entry but prevents exit. A live-capture trap contains the animal unharmed for later release or relocation. Each mechanism targets specific pests under specific conditions.
