Chapter 1: Understanding Percussion
Percussion is sound created by striking, shaking, or scraping an object. That simple definition covers everything from a timpani struck with a mallet to a vibraphone's motor-driven plates to a snare drum's crisp attack to the soft brush of a wire brush against a drum head. What makes percussion distinct—and what matters practically—is how sound is generated: direct physical impact on a vibrating surface, not air forced through a column or strings under tension.
Understanding percussion means understanding vibration and how the materials and design of an instrument control that vibration. When a percussion instrument is struck or shaken, the surface moves back and forth. That movement pushes and pulls the air around it, creating sound waves. The faster the surface vibrates, the higher the pitch. The more forcefully it vibrates, the louder the sound. The shape and material of the instrument determine how freely those vibrations can occur and how long they persist before friction and internal damping bring them to a stop. Every design choice—the thickness of a drum head, the composition of a cymbal alloy, the internal structure of a mallet—either encourages or restricts vibration in specific ways.
