At its most literal, "pencil lead" is a misnomer that has persisted for centuries. There is no lead in it. What we call lead is a composite material, typically a mixture of finely ground graphite, clay (usually kaolin), and a binder. The proportions of these ingredients are not arbitrary; they are the single most important factor in determining a lead's character. More graphite makes a darker, softer, and smoother mark. More clay makes a harder, lighter, and more brittle mark. The binder, often a cellulose derivative or a synthetic resin, holds the mixture together during the manufacturing process and influences the lead's overall strength and flexibility. Consider a common scenario in an architecture firm. A designer is sketching on a heavy, coated presentation board with a 0.5 mm mechanical pencil. The lead, with its high graphite-to-clay ratio, is relatively soft.
