Structured cabling is the physical backbone of every modern network, and at its heart sits a deceptively simple device: the patch panel. It is not a switch, a router, or a server. It does not process data, make routing decisions, or store information. Its job is far more fundamental, yet removing it from a network rack would introduce chaos in a matter of minutes. The patch panel is the central point of organization for your network's cabling, providing a fixed, permanent, and standardized interface between the cables that run through the walls and the shorter cables that connect to your active equipment. To understand what a patch panel does, imagine a new office floor being fitted out for a hundred employees. Each workstation needs a network connection. An electrician's job ends at the wall outlet, but the network's job begins there. A cable, often called horizontal cabling, is run from each wall outlet back to a central location, which is usually a telecommunications room or a server rack.
