At their simplest, paper towels are made of wood fiber—usually a blend of virgin (newly harvested and processed) softwood and hardwood pulp, or recycled fiber recovered from used paper products, or both. The choice of fiber source and blend fundamentally determines the product's cost, performance characteristics, and environmental footprint. Virgin fiber, especially from softwoods like pine or spruce, produces longer fibers that naturally trap air and water, giving the towel higher absorbency and wet strength. Recycled fiber, by contrast, consists of shorter fibers already broken down by previous processing; it absorbs water but typically requires chemical reinforcement to maintain strength when wet. Understanding this distinction is the first step in specifying correctly—a "premium" paper towel claiming superior absorbency is usually made primarily from virgin softwood fiber, which is more expensive and requires more processing energy than recycled alternatives.
