A paper clip is a bent wire fastener. A clamp is a mechanical device that holds two or more objects together by applying pressure. Together, they represent a category of fastening tools so common that most users treat them as disposable commodities—grab one from a drawer, use it once, discard it. Yet the moment you move beyond casual office use into professional, business, or serious hobbyist work, that casualness becomes expensive.

Paper clips hold stacks of papers and thin materials together by friction and spring tension. A standard wire clip—typically made from steel wire bent into a double-loop shape—creates enough grip through its coils to keep 20 to 30 sheets of paper from sliding apart. Clamps, by contrast, hold heavier or more rigid materials together using mechanical advantage: a threaded screw, a lever, or a spring mechanism that applies controlled pressure between two jaws. A C-clamp can hold a wooden board, a metal casting, or a laminated assembly in place while glue dries, while a bar clamp can span a wider distance and distribute force more evenly.

The distinction matters because it reveals why one tool is not interchangeable with another. A paper clip will not hold a wooden dowel in position while you drill a hole through it. A bar clamp cannot grip individual sheets of paper. Understanding what each tool does—and what it cannot do—is the foundation of using these fasteners effectively.
