Paintball is a spherical gelatin capsule filled with water-soluble dye, designed to break on impact and mark a target. It is the consumable core of paintball sports—a product that directly affects marker reliability, player safety, field maintenance costs, and event profitability. Yet most operators, facility managers, and serious players treat it as an interchangeable commodity. It is not. Understanding what paintball actually is, how it works, and why its specifications matter is foundational to making informed operational and business decisions in this category.
The Basic Design and Function
A paintball consists of three essential components: an outer shell, an inner fill, and the space between them. The shell is typically made of gelatin or a proprietary gelatin-blend compound. The fill is a liquid suspension—usually composed of water, polymer thickeners, food-grade dyes, and additives designed to resist separation, prevent shell degradation, and survive temperature swings. The space between shell and fill creates a thin air pocket or buffer zone that contributes to the ball's behavior on impact and in flight.
When a paintball is fired through a marker (the paintball gun), it accelerates from rest to approximately 250 to 280 feet per second in competitive play, and can reach higher velocities in recreational or special-use scenarios.
