A paintball gun is a pneumatic mechanical device that fires projectiles filled with water-soluble paint by converting compressed air or gas into force applied to a moving bolt and hammer assembly. Unlike firearms, paintball guns operate at much lower pressures (typically 800 to 1200 pounds per square inch, compared to tens of thousands in ammunition-based weapons), use paint-filled polymer spheres rather than bullets, and are designed to mark opponents without causing injury. Understanding what a paintball gun is, at the mechanical level, is the foundation for everything that follows: selecting the right model for your use, maintaining it properly, diagnosing failures, and making informed business decisions if you operate or service them.
The basic firing cycle in a paintball gun works like this: compressed air or nitrogen stored in a tank attached to the gun is released through a valve when you pull the trigger. That air travels through the gun's internal chamber and strikes a bolt or sear, which moves backward. As the bolt retracts, it clears the firing chamber and allows a paint ball to roll into position from the hopper (the container attached to the top that feeds rounds). A hammer spring then pushes the bolt forward again, and air that is still flowing through the gun—controlled by a regulator that maintains consistent pressure—is directed behind the ball, accelerating it down the barrel at speeds typically between 250 and 300 feet per second.
