Paintball grenades are small, self-contained devices designed to burst and disperse paintball fill over a defined area when triggered by impact, pressure, or a timed fuse. In competitive and recreational paintball, they represent a distinct category of equipment: not a gun or marker, but an area-effect tool that delivers paint across a radius rather than along a single trajectory. Understanding what a grenade actually is—mechanically, operationally, and in terms of its role within the broader paintball game—is foundational to selecting, using, and maintaining them effectively.
The basic structure of a paintball grenade is simple: a hollow sphere, usually made of plastic or rubber, filled with paintball fill (typically oil-based paint, sometimes with gelatin or other viscosity modifiers), sealed shut, and rigged with a burst mechanism. The burst mechanism is the key functional element. It is triggered by impact—when the grenade hits a surface or player with sufficient force—or by a timed fuse that the player activates by hand before throwing. When triggered, the mechanism ruptures the shell, causing the fill to spray outward in a burst pattern. A player or equipment hit by the burst is marked with paint, just as if struck by a paintball shot from a marker. This marking determines whether a player is eliminated from play, depending on the rules of the game or event.
