What an Air Tank Is and What It Does
A paintball air tank is a pressure vessel—typically cylindrical, made of aluminum, carbon fiber, or steel—manufactured to contain gas at pressures ranging from 800 to 4500 pounds per square inch (PSI), depending on type. The tank connects to a paintball marker via a quick-disconnect coupling, which opens when mated and closes when separated. Inside the marker, a regulator reduces the stored pressure to a stable operating pressure (typically 120–160 PSI for most recreational markers, up to 300+ PSI for tournament markers), which is then used to cycle the bolt or sear mechanism and push the paintball down the barrel.
