Chapter 1: Understanding Paint
Paint is a material suspension designed to form a protective and decorative film on a surface. It arrives in your can as a liquid—pourable, brushable, sprayable—and hardens into a solid layer. Understanding what paint actually contains and how it transforms from liquid to solid is the foundation for every decision you'll make about selecting, applying, and troubleshooting it.
What Paint Contains
Paint consists of four basic components: binder, pigment, solvent, and additives. Each serves a specific function, and the ratio of these components determines how the paint performs.
The binder is the film-forming ingredient. It's the ingredient that actually becomes the dried coating. When the paint cures, the binder hardens into a continuous film that adheres to the substrate and provides durability, gloss, flexibility, and adhesion. Common binders include acrylic latex (water-based polymer), alkyd resin (oil-based), epoxy (two-part polymerized resin), and polyurethane. The binder you choose has more impact on paint performance than any other single component.
Pigments are fine, insoluble particles suspended in the binder. They provide color, opacity (hiding power), and often contribute properties like corrosion resistance (in epoxies and primers) or UV protection (in exterior coatings). Titanium dioxide is the most common white pigment; iron oxides provide reds, yellows, and browns; and synthetic organic pigments provide bright colors. A gallon of white paint is roughly 20-30% pigment by volume; colored paints may contain higher or lower ratios depending on the color and opacity desired.
