A pager is a one-way wireless receiver designed to display text, numeric, or tone-based messages sent to a specific address on a dedicated communication network. It receives signals but does not transmit—this asymmetry is fundamental to understanding what pagers are and why they persist in a world of smartphones.

To grasp why that design choice matters, consider a scenario. A hospital emergency department uses pagers to alert trauma surgeons during critical incidents. When a multi-vehicle collision brings five severely injured patients through the doors, the dispatch center sends a single alert to all trauma on-call physicians—perhaps twenty recipients simultaneously. That message reaches every pager in the cohort regardless of whether they are in a basement, an operating room with RF shielding, a parking garage, or on a rural road outside the city. The pagers display the message. The surgeons see it. They respond by voice call or in person. The entire alert system consumed minimal bandwidth, required no acknowledgment from receivers, placed no demand on cellular networks, and operated reliably even in environments where cell service is spotty or overwhelmed. That one-way broadcast to many addresses, delivered with certainty, is the core strength of pager systems.
