Chapter 1: Understanding Packing Tape

Packing tape is a roll of polymer backing material coated on one or both sides with adhesive. That simple definition conceals a material engineered to bond two surfaces together under tension, temperature variation, humidity change, and sometimes decades of storage. To use packing tape effectively and to buy the right product for your situation, you need to understand what you're actually buying: not just a roll, but a system of backing material, adhesive chemistry, and manufacturing tolerances that will either hold your package closed or fail in a way that costs you time, product damage, or customer trust.

Start with the basics. Packing tape serves one primary function: creating a permanent seal between overlapping layers of corrugated cardboard, kraft paper, plastic film, or other shipping materials. The seal must resist the stresses that packages experience during handling, transit, storage, and stacking. A package sealed at your warehouse in California might sit in a truck bed in 140°F heat, then in a 32°F overnight cold snap, then in a 75°F indoor receiving dock. The tape must hold through all of that. If it fails, the box opens, product spills or is lost, and someone—your customer, your carrier, or your warehouse staff—has to deal with the consequence. In industrial and commercial shipping, that consequence often translates directly to cost: rework, damaged merchandise, liability, or lost customers.
