The Object Itself
An oven bag is a food-grade polymer pouch designed to contain food during dry-heat cooking. The most common form is a flat, rectangular bag made from a heat-stable nylon film, often supplied with a twist tie or a heat-sealable closure. The bag is placed in a roasting pan or directly on an oven rack, and the cooking environment inside it becomes the active mechanism: a sealed, moisture-saturated microclimate held at the oven's set temperature.
The material is the entire product. A standard oven bag is approximately 0.015 to 0.025 millimeters thick (15 to 25 microns). That film, usually a type of nylon (polyamide) or a multilayer laminate, is engineered to withstand sustained temperatures of 200°C to 230°C (400°F to 450°F) without melting, deforming, or releasing plasticizers into the food. The physical structure of the film is what enables the unique cooking environment. It is a barrier, but not a perfect one. It allows no liquid water to escape, but it is slightly permeable to gases, which prevents pressure buildup to the point of explosion. This partial permeability is not a manufacturing defect; it is the defining engineering specification of the product.
