Origami paper is not generic craft paper. The difference lies in a precise set of physical properties: fiber composition, weight, surface finish, and dimensional behavior under stress. Understanding what makes origami paper distinctive, and why those properties matter in practice, is the foundation for everything else in this handbook.
What Origami Paper Actually Is
Origami paper is a category of thin, foldable paper engineered or selected to sustain repeated creasing and complex geometric folding without tearing, splitting, or losing shape. The paper must perform a set of mechanical tasks that standard office paper, card stock, or even most art papers cannot reliably do.
Traditional origami paper, particularly washi, is made from plant fibers—typically kozo (mulberry), mitsumata (Edgeworthia), or gampi (paper bush)—beaten and formed into sheets with little to no bleaching or heavy sizing. This fiber structure creates paper that bends repeatedly without fatigue, holds a crease sharply, and resists tearing along fold lines. The fibers themselves are longer and more flexible than those in Western machine-made paper, which allows the sheet to deform and reform rather than snap.
Modern origami paper has expanded beyond traditional washi. Today the category includes colored machine-made papers (often from wood pulp blended with synthetic additives), foil-backed or metallic variants, watercolor-weight papers adapted for folding, and specialty blends designed to combine specific properties—bright color, metallic sheen, texture, weight reduction, or improved crease memory. What unifies them as "origami paper" is not their source material but their ability to perform under
