Walk through any commercial service bay or any well-equipped home garage, and you will see the same scene: a worker with a wrench and a plastic drain pan, trying to pull off an oil filter without spilling hot oil all over the floor. For decades, this was done with brute force and a prayer. The filter either came loose or it did not. If the filter was over-tightened or corroded, a technician might resort to a screwdriver punched through the filter body to get leverage, which always resulted in a twisted metal can and a puddle of oil. The spark plug of that problem, so to speak, was that the industry needed a better tool. That tool is an oil filter drain, and its purpose is to solve the problem of getting used oil out of a filter cleanly, safely, and without damaging the component you are removing or the environment you work in.

An oil filter drain, at its most basic level, is a tool designed to puncture, open, or otherwise access the inner chamber of an oil filter to allow the trapped oil to evacuate before the filter is removed. This is not just a convenience. Any oil filter, regardless of whether it is a spin-on canister or a cartridge element, retains a specific amount of oil.
