What a Network Cable Actually Does
A network cable carries electrical signals that represent data. When your laptop sends a file to a server, that data does not exist as abstract information traveling through the air. It becomes a series of electrical pulses—rapid voltage changes—that travel through copper conductors inside the cable. The cable's job is to move those signals from point A to point B with minimal loss, noise, or distortion. That straightforward function is why cable quality, length, shielding, and connector condition directly affect whether your network operates reliably at its rated speed or fails intermittently at a distance.
Most network cables also carry power alongside data.
