Chapter 1: Understanding Nebulizers

A nebulizer is a medical device that turns liquid medication into a fine mist or aerosol so that it can be breathed directly into the lungs. That sentence is accurate, but it does not convey the practical reality. When you pick up a nebulizer, you are handling a small, precision-engineered system with a single job: to convert a carefully measured dose of liquid drug into particles that are the right size to travel deep into the airways, and to do so consistently, quickly, and with minimal waste. It is a delivery mechanism, and like any delivery mechanism, its success is measured by how much of the payload arrives at the destination.

The destination is the bronchial tree. A drug particle that is too large will impact on the back of the throat or the upper trachea and be swallowed, never reaching the site of action. A particle that is too small will be inhaled and then exhaled before it has a chance to deposit. The ideal particle size for most respiratory medications is between 1 and 5 micrometers in aerodynamic diameter. This is not an abstract engineering preference; it is based on how the physics of airflow and inertia behave inside the branching, narrowing tubes of the human lung.
