Nail polish removers are solvents—chemicals engineered to break down and dissolve the film that hardens on your nails when polish dries. To understand what makes different removers work differently, and why choosing the right one matters, you need to know what's actually happening at a chemical level when you apply remover to polish.

When nail polish sits on a nail, it hardens through evaporation. The liquid polish contains pigments, resins, plasticizers, and a volatile solvent. As the solvent evaporates, the other components bond together and solidify into a protective film. That film is what you see: the color, shine, and durability of your manicure. Breaking it apart requires a solvent powerful enough to re-dissolve those bonds.

The most common and effective solvent for this job is acetone—a small, highly polar molecule that penetrates and breaks apart the polymer chains in dried polish. Acetone works quickly because it dissolves both the resins and plasticizers that hold the polish film together. It evaporates rapidly from both the nail and your brush, which is why acetone-based removers leave nails feeling dry and why, in a busy salon, technicians can move through clients quickly. A typical acetone remover will soften and lift polish in 30 seconds to two minutes, depending on polish thickness and application method.
