Any working nail technician will tell you that the electric drill is the tool that separates a modern service from what was possible in the last century. But the drill itself is only one half of the system. The other half is the accessory that touches the client's nail – a tiny, precision-engineered piece of metal, abrasive, or composite material that is doing the actual cutting, grinding, sanding, or etching. If you don't understand those accessories, you are working blind. You are guessing based on what the bit looks like, or what the sales rep said, or what your mentor used in 2019. This chapter is about what nail drill accessories actually are – their components, their tolerances, and how they function – so you can build a mental model that turns them from consumables into implements you choose with reason and care.
To understand nail drill accessories, you must first understand that they are not simple drill bits in the way a woodworking hole-borer is. A nail drill operates at very high speeds – typically 10,000 to 35,000 revolutions per minute (RPM) – but at very low torque compared to a power tool. This is a deliberate engineering choice. The motor spins fast so that it can quickly and efficiently remove small amounts of material, but the low torque means that if the bit encounters too much resistance, friction, or a hard obstruction, it stalls rather than grabs and tears the client's natural
