To work professionally in this field, you need to understand what nail care actually is, how the underlying biology and chemistry work, what role products and systems play, and why clients and professionals rely on these services and systems in the first place.

What Nail Care Is

Nail care encompasses three overlapping domains: the medical and biological aspects of healthy nails; the personal-care and cosmetic enhancement of nails; and the professional service industry that delivers nail treatments, extensions, and maintenance.

At the personal level, nail care begins with understanding the natural nail. The nail plate is a semipermeable structure made primarily of keratin—the same protein found in skin and hair, but arranged in a denser, harder formation. The nail grows from the matrix, a living tissue hidden beneath the cuticle at the base of the nail.
