The Role of a Music Stand Light

A music stand light is a task lamp, but it is not an ordinary one. It is a tool designed to do one specific job: illuminate a printed page or a tablet screen in an environment where the ambient light is either insufficient or deliberately dimmed. That job is harder than it looks. The light must be bright enough to read clearly, but it must not glare off glossy paper, cast shadows from the player's hands or instrument, spill into the audience's eyes, or create bright spots that force the eye to adapt constantly. It must also fit physically on or near a music stand without interfering with the instrument, the player's hands, or the page-turning motion. It must run quietly, generate minimal heat, and last for the duration of a rehearsal or a performance without flickering, dimming, or failing.

In a symphony orchestra pit, the stage is usually dark so that the audience can see the action on stage. The musicians, however, are below the stage line, often in a tightly packed space, and their printed parts are impossible to read under house lighting that is set for the audience.
