A music box is a mechanical device that produces music by plucking a series of tuned steel teeth (called a comb) with a rotating, pin-studded cylinder. The cylinder rotates, typically at a controlled speed, and as each pin passes underneath the comb, it lifts a tooth and releases it. When released, the tooth vibrates and produces a specific pitch. The pattern of pins on the cylinder encodes the melody; the spacing and height of the pins determine which notes play and for how long.
