A moving or shipping box is a rigid container designed to hold, protect, and transport goods from one location to another. Its purpose is straightforward: to contain items safely during movement, storage, or shipment while preventing damage from impact, moisture, stacking pressure, and handling. But what makes a box suitable for one situation and inadequate for another depends on its material composition, wall construction, dimensions, and cost. Understanding these fundamentals is essential before evaluating specific types or choosing between suppliers.
The most common moving and shipping box in commercial and residential use is corrugated fiberboard—a composite material made of kraft paper (strong, unbleached paper made from wood pulp) formed into waves, or "flutes," and bonded between flat paper layers called liners. This structure is what gives corrugated boxes their characteristic ridged appearance when you look at the edge. The flutes provide cushioning and structural strength while keeping the overall box lightweight and therefore affordable to manufacture and ship. A corrugated box might weigh only a few ounces while holding dozens of pounds of cargo, which is why corrugated fiberboard dominates the moving and shipping market for most applications.
The flute structure comes in distinct sizes and patterns. The most common are C-flute (the standard for general shipping), B-flute (narrower waves, slightly stiffer), and A-flute (taller waves, more cushioning but less stiffness). Larger flutes like E-flute exist but are less common in moving contexts; smaller profiles like F-flute are used for lighter specialty applications.
