The first thing to understand about motorcycle protective gear is that it is not clothing. It is a system of engineered components, each designed to manage specific forms of energy. When you ride, your body is exposed to three primary threats: impact energy, abrasion energy, and crushing or shearing forces. Protective gear exists to absorb, deflect, or dissipate these energies before they cause injury to your skin, bones, and internal organs. Every material choice, every seam placement, and every certification label on a piece of gear is a decision about how to manage one of these forms of energy.

Consider a simple slide at 60 km/h. If your body contacts the pavement, the friction between your clothing and the road surface will generate heat. That heat is the result of mechanical energy converting to thermal energy. Unprotected skin will abrade—road rash—at surprisingly low speeds. At 60 km/h, a typical asphalt surface can wear through denim in under one second. A dedicated abrasion-resistant textile or leather hide will not tear, but it will still allow heat to build up. The gear's job is to slow down that energy transfer sufficiently that you can slide to a stop without the material itself failing and exposing your skin.
