What a Motorcycle Helmet Actually Is
A helmet is not a simple hat. It is engineered to absorb the energy of impact, distribute force across a wide area, and remain attached to your head under the forces of a crash. A typical helmet weighs between 3.5 and 5.5 pounds (1.6 to 2.5 kg) and contains materials chosen for specific physical properties: stiffness, impact absorption, friction, and durability.
The outer shell is usually made of fiberglass-reinforced plastic (fiberglass), polycarbonate, or carbon fiber composite. It serves two purposes. First, it spreads the impact force across a larger surface area, preventing the liner from being crushed in a small point. Second, it abrades against the road surface during a slide, dissipating energy that would otherwise be transmitted directly to your head. The shell itself does not absorb impact energy—it is too rigid for that. Instead, it is a distribution layer that transfers force inward to the liner.
