A motor vehicle window system is not a single part. It is a coordinated assembly of components that allow a driver or passenger to see out of, control the opening and closing of, and maintain the seal of an opening in the vehicle's body. Understanding what these components are, how they work together, and why failures in one component often cascade to problems in others is essential for anyone responsible for window repair, selection, or maintenance.

The most visible component is the glass itself—either the fixed glass in a side window, rear window, or windshield, or the movable glass that slides up and down or pivots in a manually or power-operated door window. But glass is inert. It requires a mechanical system to move it, seals to prevent air and water infiltration, trim and hardware to secure it, and weatherstripping to protect the gaps around it.
