In the broadest sense, a wheel assembly consists of the tire (the elastomer and fabric component that makes contact with the road), the rim (the steel or aluminum ring that holds the tire), the wheel hub (the central body that bolts to the vehicle's axle), bearings (which allow the wheel to rotate freely), brake components (the rotor and pads that stop the vehicle), fasteners (lug nuts and bolts that hold everything together), and increasingly, sensors (tire-pressure monitors, wheel-speed sensors for anti-lock braking).
