A motor vehicle mirror is a reflective optical system mounted on a vehicle to provide the driver with visibility of areas behind, to the sides, and below the vehicle that are not directly visible through the windshield or windows. This definition sounds simple, but it conceals significant complexity. A mirror is not merely a piece of glass and a bracket. It is an engineered component that must meet specific visibility standards, withstand years of temperature cycling and physical stress, integrate with the vehicle's frame and sometimes its electrical systems, and function reliably in conditions ranging from -40°C to +70°C and beyond. Understanding what mirrors actually are, how they work, and why they matter is essential before selecting, installing, or maintaining them.

The foundation of mirror function is optical reflection. When light from an object strikes a reflective surface at a specific angle, it bounces back to the viewer's eye at a predictable angle—the angle of incidence equals the angle of reflection. For mirrors to be useful in vehicles, this reflection must be accurate enough that a driver can see objects clearly and judge their distance and speed.
