Motor vehicle lighting is infrastructure. Like the brakes, suspension, and electrical system on a vehicle, it is a set of physical and electrical components engineered to perform specific functions under defined conditions, governed by safety standards, and subject to wear, failure, and replacement. If you drive a car, truck, or bus, or maintain one, or sell one, or build one, you are already making decisions about lighting—what type to buy, whether to upgrade, how to install it, and what to do when it fails. Most of those decisions happen without much understanding of what the system actually does or how it works. This chapter changes that.
Why Motor Vehicle Lighting Matters
Start with the most obvious reason: visibility. A driver cannot see the road, obstacles, pedestrians, or other vehicles without light. At dusk, night, or in poor weather, vehicle headlights are the primary source of road illumination in most driving scenarios. A vehicle without functioning headlights is unsafe to operate and is illegal to drive in nearly every jurisdiction. But visibility is only part of the story.
Motor vehicle lighting also communicates. Taillights tell drivers behind you that your vehicle is present and moving. Brake lights tell them you are decelerating. Turn signals tell them which direction you intend to move. Hazard lights tell them your vehicle is stopped or moving slowly on a roadway.
