A mosaic kit is not a box of tiles and a tube of glue. It is a pre-engineered system for producing a finished, durable mosaic surface with predictable results. In its most common commercial form, it consists of thousands of small pieces of ceramic, glass, stone, or porcelain, arranged in a pattern and factory-bonded face-down to a fiberglass mesh. You buy it in a large sheet, maybe a square foot or a square meter, and you install it onto a prepared substrate of cement board, plywood, or plaster. Once the sheet is set in adhesive and cured, you grout the joints, and the mesh becomes part of the finished wall or floor. That is the basic architecture of the vast majority of kits on the market, and nearly every technical detail in this book hangs off that one mental model.

Why does the kit exist at all? Because installing mosaic "by hand," piece by piece, is brutally slow. A single square foot of a small mosaic pattern can contain several hundred individual tesserae (the industry word for a single tile piece). Setting each one by hand with tweezers is a task for a dedicated specialist, not a contractor on a schedule.
