The monofin, in its most basic form, is a single fin worn on both feet, designed to propel a swimmer with a unified leg motion rather than the alternating flutter kick used with traditional bifins. This simple design change has a profound effect on swimming dynamics, yielding efficiency and speed that are unattainable with any other human-powered aquatic propulsion system. Understanding what a monofin is requires moving past the superficial appearance and examining its mechanics, its history, and its role in different disciplines.
At its core, the monofin functions as a flexible foil or hydrofoil. Think of it not as a set of rigid blades but as a single, flexible wing underwater. The swimmer lies prone in the water, arms extended forward, and performs a dolphin kick. This kick originates from the chest and travels through the core, hips, and legs to the feet. As the body undulates, the monofin's blade bends and flexes, creating a pressure differential on its top and bottom surfaces. This differential generates lift and, when oriented correctly, thrust that pushes the swimmer forward. The key is that the entire blade works as a single unit, capturing and releasing energy with each up and down movement. This allows for a much larger propulsive surface area compared to two independent fins, which is a primary reason for its significant speed advantage.
