What a Moisture Meter Actually Measures

A moisture meter is a portable electronic instrument that estimates the amount of water contained in a solid material. It does not weigh the material, and it does not dry it in an oven to determine loss. Instead, it infers moisture content by measuring a physical property of the material that changes with its water content — most commonly, the material's ability to conduct an electrical current, or its dielectric constant. The meter then translates that physical measurement into a moisture percentage using a built-in scale or an external correction table.

The tool exists because in construction, woodworking, restoration, and building inspection, the moisture state of a material is decisive. Wood flooring that is installed too wet will shrink and gap as it dries. A concrete slab that is still too damp will ruin a moisture-sensitive floor coating. Framing lumber that has dried out after a leak may be structurally sound, but the wood itself can still harbor enough moisture to feed mold. In all these cases, the question "is it dry enough?" is not opinion — it is a measurable quantity, and a moisture meter is how you measure it.
