Model railroading is a craft of constraints and engineering decisions. It is not simply the operation of scaled trains, but the construction of a functioning miniature world where a small change in track radius or a slight variation in wheel profile can determine whether a train derails or runs flawlessly. To understand this category, one must first understand the fundamental concepts of scale, gauge, and the electrical or digital systems that animate it. This chapter establishes these principles in a concrete, practical manner.

Scale and Gauge: The Foundation

The most important distinction to understand is the difference between scale and gauge. Scale is the mathematical ratio of the model's size to the real-world prototype. If a real locomotive is 60 feet long and the model is 1 foot long, the scale is 1:60. This ratio dictates every dimension of a model, from the height of a cab door to the length of a passenger car. The most common scales in current production worldwide are HO (1:87), N (1:160), O (1:48), and G (1:22.5 to 1:29, depending on manufacturer). Gauge, on the other hand, is the distance between the inner sides of the rails on the track. The standard gauge for HO scale track is 16.5 mm, which is derived from the real-world standard gauge of 4 feet 8.5 inches divided by 87. N scale track uses a 9 mm gauge.
