A mirror is an optical device that reflects light and images by means of a reflective coating applied to a substrate material, almost always glass. That substrate, the coating composition, the backing layer, and the way the mirror is installed and maintained all affect how well it performs. Understanding mirrors as engineered products—not simply decorative objects—is essential for anyone who specifies them, installs them, maintains them, or resells them professionally.

At the most basic level, a mirror works because a thin layer of reflective material (historically silver, now typically aluminum) is applied to the back surface of glass. When light strikes that reflective coating, it bounces back, and because glass is transparent and relatively smooth, the reflected light preserves the image it encounters. But the quality of reflection, the durability of the coating, and the stability of the glass substrate all depend on material choices and manufacturing methods.

How Mirrors Are Made

Most mirrors sold today are manufactured using a process called wet-coating, in which a glass pane is chemically cleaned, and a reflective metal layer (usually aluminum) is applied to its back surface through a chemical reaction. This process has been refined over more than a century and remains the standard because it produces a reflective surface that is durable, affordable, and consistent.
