Chapter 1: Understanding Medical
Medical equipment is the physical infrastructure of modern healthcare. It ranges from simple devices—a blood pressure cuff, an oxygen concentrator, a defibrillator—to complex systems that cost millions and require dedicated staff to operate: CT scanners, ventilators, dialysis machines, surgical suites, laboratory analyzers. Regardless of complexity, all medical equipment exists to do one fundamental thing: extend, enhance, or replace a human physiological function, or measure it accurately enough to guide clinical decision-making.
Understanding what medical equipment actually is and how it works requires grounding in concrete reality, not abstraction. Consider a simple example: an automated external defibrillator (AED). On the surface, it is a device that delivers electrical current to a person in cardiac arrest. But what it actually does is restore a normal heart rhythm by interrupting dangerous electrical patterns. It contains a battery, capacitors to build electrical charge quickly, electrodes that contact the skin, sensors that analyze the heart rhythm via those electrodes, and a processor that decides whether a shock is appropriate. It also contains an internal clock that logs when it was used, how many shocks were delivered, and the time interval—information that becomes critical evidence for understanding what happened during resuscitation. A clinic buying an AED must understand all of these elements: Will the battery last through the expected number of uses before replacement? Do the electrode pads need regular replacement, and if so, what is the actual cost per use? Can staff reliably operate it, or will panic override the simple
