Chapter 1: Understanding Medical Masks
A medical mask is a regulated device designed to filter particles traveling between the wearer's respiratory tract and the surrounding air. Unlike many products people assume are simple or interchangeable, medical masks have specific performance characteristics, regulatory classifications, and appropriate use cases. Understanding what a mask actually does—and what it does not do—is the foundation for making sound purchasing, usage, and compliance decisions.
To grasp how masks work, start with the basic direction of protection. Medical masks worn in healthcare settings serve two primary functions: source control (filtering particles exhaled by the wearer to protect others) and wearer protection (filtering particles in the air around the wearer to protect the wearer). The degree to which a mask accomplishes each depends on its design, materials, fit, and the type of particles it encounters.
A medical mask typically consists of three layers. The outer layer, often colored blue or white, repels liquid and protects the inner layers from splashes or sprays—critical in settings where blood, saliva, or respiratory secretions may be present. The middle layer is the filter, usually made of melt-blown polypropylene or a similar nonwoven material engineered to trap particles through a combination of mechanical sieving (blocking particles larger than the fiber gaps), interception (particles following air currents into fibers and adhering), and electrostatic attraction (charged fibers attracting particles). The inner layer, facing the wearer's nose and mouth, wicks moisture and is designed for comfort during extended wear. These layers are typically held together with
