Chapter 1: Understanding Mechanical Puzzles

A mechanical puzzle is an object that appears to be a single, unified whole but is, in fact, a construction of interdependent parts held in tension. The puzzle challenges you to shift, remove, or reorient these parts to achieve a specific state, most commonly disassembly, assembly, or disentanglement. The fundamental requirement is that the solution is not immediately apparent. If a solution is obvious, it is a toy, not a puzzle.

Consider a simple wooden cube. If it is solid and painted, it is a block. If it breaks into two halves that fit together on a dowel, it has a low level of puzzle value. But if the cube is composed of six interlocking pieces, where each piece holds the others in place, and the only way to separate them is to move a specific piece in a precise and non-obvious way, you have a mechanical puzzle. The defining characteristic is a non-trivial solve path. This is the sequence of moves required to reach the solution state from the starting state.

Six Core Principles of Mechanical Puzzles

While seemingly diverse, nearly all mechanical puzzles rely on one or more of six core principles. Understanding these principles is your first step in evaluating and appreciating any puzzle.
