Chapter 1: Understanding Mattresses
A mattress is a engineered product designed to support the human body during sleep while providing comfort and lasting a defined lifespan under specific use conditions. Unlike many pieces of furniture, a mattress is not monolithic. It is a layered system of materials—steel, foam, latex, fabric, adhesives—each chosen and arranged to accomplish specific functions: distribute pressure, respond to weight shifts, isolate motion, regulate temperature, and maintain structure under repeated loading over years of nightly use.
Understanding how a mattress works requires understanding what happens when a sleeping person lies on it. When you lie down, your body weight concentrates at certain points—shoulders, hips, heels. If the mattress surface were rigid, these contact points would experience dangerous pressure, restricting blood flow and causing discomfort. A mattress solves this by being compliant—it deforms under pressure, spreading your weight across a larger surface area, reducing peak pressure at contact points. This is the first and most basic function of any mattress: pressure relief through material compression.
But compliance alone is not enough. If a mattress compressed easily and stayed compressed—like pressing into sand—it would feel unsupportive and unstable. Your spine would sink into a U-shape, and you would feel as though you were falling through the bed. This is where support structure becomes critical. Every mattress must compress enough to relieve pressure but resist compression enough to maintain the spine's natural alignment. The tension between these two requirements—compliance and support—defines the core engineering challenge in mattress design.
