A masonry trowel is a hand tool consisting of a flat, rectangular or shaped steel blade welded or riveted to a handle, designed to apply, compress, and finish mortar in masonry work. But describing what it is tells you nothing about why it matters or how it actually works. The real significance of a masonry trowel lies in what happens at the blade-to-mortar interface during application: the trowel compresses the mortar bed, forces excess water toward the surface for bleeding off, aligns and embeds the masonry unit, and finishes the visible joint face all in a single motion or series of motions. Every specification of the trowel—blade steel type, thickness, length, width, handle material, handle angle, and surface finish—directly affects how efficiently and consistently the finisher can do those things. Understanding those effects is the foundation of knowing which trowel to buy, when to replace it, and how to maintain it for the job at hand.

The core function of a trowel is compression and alignment. When a mason applies mortar with a trowel blade, the blade presses downward and laterally, compacting the mortar into a dense, uniform bed.
