A marine chartplotter is a specialized computer system that does one essential job: it displays your vessel's real-time position on an electronic chart and helps you navigate safely from one point to another. At its core, a chartplotter combines three distinct technologies. First, a GPS receiver—or more accurately, a GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) receiver—picks up signals from satellites overhead and calculates your exact latitude and longitude. Second, a digital chart database stored in the unit or accessed from an external source displays the waters you are navigating: coastlines, buoys, shallow areas, traffic lanes, and hazards. Third, a processor performs the calculation and display work, running specialized navigation software that does waypoint planning, course and speed calculations, and often integration with other systems like autopilot or radar. All three components must work together, and when any one fails or is misconfigured, navigation becomes uncertain.
