Chapter 1: Understanding Makeup
Makeup is a suspension of solid particles in a liquid or semi-solid base, designed to adhere to skin and deliver color, coverage, texture, or protective properties. It is not a single product category but a family of distinct formulations—each with different chemical structures, application methods, staying power, and performance characteristics. Understanding what makeup actually is requires looking at three things simultaneously: the materials it contains, how those materials work together functionally, and the real-world context where performance matters.
Begin with the basic structure. Most makeup contains pigments, binders, and functional ingredients. Pigments are solid particles—iron oxides, titanium dioxide, mica, lakes (synthetic dyes bound to mineral carriers)—that provide color and opacity. Binders are the film-forming agents that hold pigments in place on skin: oils, waxes, polymers, silicones, or emulsifiers that create adhesion and staying power. Functional ingredients serve specific purposes: humectants (glycerin, propylene glycol) draw moisture to the skin; silicones (dimethicone, cyclopentasiloxane) create smoothness and slip; talc or starch-based powders absorb oil and provide texture; preservatives prevent bacterial growth; and texture modifiers adjust how the product feels and applies. The ratio and type of each component determine whether a product performs as a long-wear foundation, a translucent powder, a creamy blush, or something else entirely.
The chemistry matters because different skin types, climates, and use cases require different trade-offs. A waterproof, long-wear foundation needs stronger film-forming binders and water-resistant polymers, but those same binders can feel heavy on oily skin or emphasize texture on
