A magnifier is a lens or system of lenses designed to make small objects appear larger than they are to the naked eye. That simple definition masks a tool with measurable optical properties, real limits, and specific advantages and drawbacks depending on what you're trying to do. Before you can choose a magnifier or use one effectively, you need to understand what magnification actually does, how it works, and why it matters in contexts from jewelry repair to forensic document examination.

At its most basic, magnification is about angular size. When you look at a postage stamp from arm's length, the angle it subtends in your field of view is small. Your eye has trouble resolving fine detail at that distance. A magnifier bends light rays coming from the object so that they reach your eye at a wider angle. The object hasn't gotten larger; it occupies more of your visual field, so details that were invisible become visible. A 10x magnifier means the angular size of the object is 10 times larger than it would be looking at it from a standard viewing distance—typically taken as 10 inches (25 centimeters) for the naked eye. A 5x magnifier makes it 5 times larger. A 20x magnifier makes it 20 times larger.
